How to do lighting for better photography

Lighting is an important part of photography. Better lighting means better photographs. There are of course different methods available to ensure better lighting but we have to say that it all depends on your subjects character. The subjects are a decisive part of how your lighting should be. There are no thumbrules to it, but you can take diversions on it.

For example, if you have a dark toned subject and it is dusk time, you may want to turn on the lighting using artificial sources. While if you are outdoors, and there is enough sunlight, you may want to take a position that will make full advantage of natural lighting.

Also it’s a popular belief that if you are outside, there’s no need for artificial lighting. This is wrong. If you are outside too, there’s a high chance of skewed lighting. For this you may have to use artificial lighting to tone down or lighten up the dark shadowy areas.

- Find out the subjects character and tone. Adjust light accordingly.
- Find out the external lighting sources and position your subject accordingly.
- Depending on what time you are shooting, adjust your lighting intensity.
- Use a camera with flash if always.
- If indoors try to use artificial and indirect lighting.
- Never over expose your subject.
